Your Folly Beach Dog Guide
Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.

Are you looking for where to stay, where you can eat, and when you can go on the beach with your dog at Folly Beach? This is a working guide to when the beach is open to dogs, where to eat with them, where to let them run, and what to pack.
Dogs and beaches go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Fortunately, Folly Beach loves dogs too. You see it in the water bowls on patios, the easygoing restaurant culture, and the simple fact that some of the best vacation memories here happen with sandy paws nearby.
After all, the best photos from a good vacation almost always include the dog. They pull us outside, turn ordinary walks into events, and teach us to be somewhere without needing to be doing something.

📋 Beach Rules at a Glance
Folly Beach welcomes dogs on the sand year-round, with one seasonal wrinkle worth understanding before you arrive.
| Season | Dates | Dog Hours | Leash |
|---|
| Off-season | Oct 1 - Apr 30 | All day | Required |
| Summer | May 1 - Sep 30 | Before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. | Required |
Year-round rules that always apply:
- Leashes are required at all times on the beach and in public areas.
- No pets are allowed on the Folly Beach Pier.
- No pets are allowed at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve, the north-end area near Morris Island Lighthouse and the former Coast Guard station site.
- Owners are responsible for picking up and properly disposing of waste.
For most visitors, the simple rule is this: plan on leashed beach time, and in summer, work around the midday restriction.
🐾 Where Dogs Can Run Off-Leash
Folly is a leash-required island almost everywhere, with a few dedicated off-leash options nearby.
Folly Beach Bark Park at 512 East Erie Avenue near the water tower is the on-island option: free, naturally shaded, with water, seating, and waste bags.
James Island County Park Dog Park, about fifteen minutes off the island at 871 Riverland Drive, is the bigger outing: separate large- and small-dog sections, a dog-swimming lake, and rinse stations.
On-Leash Park Options
Folly River Park is a small waterfront park that works well for a leashed walk with river views.
Folly Beach County Park, at the far west and south end, also allows leashed dogs under the same seasonal hours as the rest of the beach.
Dog-Friendly Accommodations on Folly Beach
Chastain's Cottages is a family-run collection of historic vacation cottages on Folly Beach. Every property in the collection welcomes dogs, and all but one also have a fenced area. The exception is the Folly Jewel, which does not have a fenced area, but dogs are still welcome there.
Fenced yards, outdoor showers, and beach access are standard features across the rest of the collection.
Pet policy: Two-dog maximum. Dogs over 50 pounds and certain breeds require a brief prior conversation with the owner for insurance reasons.

Best Times of Year to Visit Folly with a Dog
If you have flexibility, aim for October through April. Charleston winters are mild, late fall on Folly can be beautiful, and your dog is welcome on the beach any hour of the day as long as they stay leashed.
Morning on Folly with a dog has its own rhythm: soft sunrise light, cool sand, quiet access paths, and long stretches of beach that feel almost private. In the shoulder season, the island slows down in a way that makes dog travel easier and better.
Afternoons are made for patios, shaded walks, and slow wandering around Center Street. In the shoulder season, you can move easily between outdoor meals, beach walks, and back-porch rest without feeling rushed or overheated.
Evening might be the best time of all. The tide pulls out, the light warms up, and both people and dogs seem to settle into the pace Folly does best.
If summer is your only window, the workaround is simple: front-load beach time before 10 a.m., return after 6 p.m., and use the Bark Park and shaded patios in between.
That is what dog-friendly really means. When the trip is built around the dog's rhythm, it often becomes a better trip for the humans too.
What to Pack for a Folly Dog Trip
- Fresh water and a collapsible bowl - don't let them drink salt water.
- A short leash for the beach - save longer lines for appropriate off-leash areas.
- Poop bags - some accesses have them, but bring your own.
- A rinse container and microfiber towel - salt, sand, and pluff mud can irritate skin.
- Paw balm or booties - summer sand and pavement can get hot fast.
- Dog-safe sunscreen - especially for light coats and thin-furred noses, ears, and bellies.
- Portable shade - useful even outside peak summer.
- Their regular food, pre-measured - vacation is not the best time to switch diets.
- A current ID tag - with a phone number that will definitely be answered.
- An emergency vet number saved in your phone - before you arrive.
Steadfastness, it seems, is more about dogs than about us. One of the reasons we love them so much.

Local Notes Worth Knowing
- Sea turtle nesting season runs May through October. Stay off the dunes and give marked nesting areas a wide berth.
- Alligators are real in the Lowcountry. The surf is one thing; still freshwater ponds, marsh edges, and unfamiliar tidal creeks are another. Do not let your dog swim in unknown still water.
- Rinse before you settle in for the evening. Salt left on a coat can irritate skin over a few days, and sandy paws follow dogs everywhere.
Folly Beach is a small island with a long, laid-back tradition of welcoming dogs. Come in the shoulder season if you can. Bring water. Watch the clock in summer. Rinse the salt off. And bring the dog, because the trip is better when they're in it.
